Cult of Orpheus celebrates five years of original opera and vocal music. The program includes selections from Sacred Works I: The Emerald Tablet, which Willamette Week praised as “fervently beautiful”, as well as excerpts from Viva’s Holiday: An Opera in One Act, the miniature opera Daphne, and other lyrical works by composer/producer Christopher Corbell, “one of Oregon’s most vital creative artists” (ArtsWatch).

The concert features baritone Dan Gibbs, mezzo-soprano Sadie Gregg, tenor Ray Jackson, and soprano Jocelyn Claire Thomas. Mezzo-soprano Rachel Hauge sings Daphne.

Vocal trio Bergerette (Viva Las Vegas, Camelia Nine, Pat Janowski) will sing settings of Baudelaire as well as traditional secular French music from medieval and Renaissance eras.
Ticket sales ended Aug 25, 2018 7:00 PM. Additional tickets may be available at the box office.

Portland’s only all-original opera and art-song company is devoted to building conscious community through new lyrical music. This year the group released its first album and also established a troupe of singers, bringing artistic depth and collaborative nuance to their recordings and performances. The vocal troupe is led by Sadie Gregg, who has performed with Portland Opera, Seattle Opera, Oregon Mahler Festival, and works as managing diva of Portland’s Opera on Tap. Gregg has been praised as “a mezzo-soprano with a rich flexible instrument” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) and “a standout” (Boston Classical Review). Soprano Jocelyn Claire Thomas has performed with many regional companies including Tacoma Opera, Eugene Opera, Opera Bend, Brava! Opera Theater and Opera Theater Oregon. Tenor Ray Jackson has sung with Portland Symphonic Choir, the Oregon Bach Festival, and Vox Resonat. Baritone Dan Gibbs comes to Portland from southern Oregon and has performed with Brava! Opera Theater, Siskiyou Singers, Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, and the Oregon Chorale. more >>>
Composer Christopher Corbell founded Cult of Orpheus in 2013 as a vehicle for new lyrical opera and art-song in Portland, Oregon. A mostly self-taught outsider with experiences as busker, singer-songwriter, and indie bandleader, Corbell has been a champion of intersectional artistic community-building, leading the iconoclastic group Classical Revolution PDX for two years and actively questioning the exclusivity and cultural biases that prevail in much of the fine arts world. Described as "one of Oregon’s most vital creative artists" (Oregon ArtsWatch), Corbell's calling is to craft shared meaning and poetic beauty in the creative fusion of music and words. He holds that "it is possible to appropriate the tools created by past aristocracies for revolutionary utterances and radical, transcendental egalitarianism." more >>>
