We’re all familiar with how X-rays allow doctors to get detailed views inside their patients to find out what’s going on without having to actually cut people open. Scientists can also use x-rays to look inside plants to study things like disease resistance, drought tolerance, and advanced breeding technologies without having to cut open or damage the plants. Using this non-destructive imaging technology we can see the unseen, such as ears and tassels of corn as they develop inside the stalk, roots as they grow in the soil, or flowers and buds as they develop into fruits or grains.

At this Science on Tap research scientist Keith Duncan talk about how x-ray imaging is a great benefit to plant science research, and can help us to find safe, effective, and sustainable ways to grow plants using fewer inputs like water, fertilizers, and pesticides.

How does your brain learn best? As the field of Neuroscience uncovers the neural mechanisms of perception and learning, can we begin to bring these findings into the classroom to help improve how students learn? Right before the school year begins, this Science on Tap will discuss the brain’s learning networks, their emotional connections and how the visual and motor pathways influence what we process. Join us as Dr. Mark Pitzer demonstrates of how each brain circuit can be recruited by instructors to improve teaching and learning in and out of the classroom and how neuroscience can make learning truly memorable.

Opera Theater Oregon’s production features Grammy® award-winning composer Michael Daugherty’s 2016 song cycle for soprano, baritone, radio announcer and ensemble, blending original lyrics with music that often draws from the simple, yet enduring folk melodies that Guthrie would rework into his own songs. Conceived as a Depression-era radio program, Daugherty’s stylistically eclectic work weaves the political, social, and environmental themes of Woody Guthrie’s era with poignant and contemporary relevance. Also on the program is an emerging and rising voice in opera, composer Michael Lanci’s award-winning Songs for Joe Hill, inspired by the protest songs of 19th Century labor activist Joe Hill. OTO’s presentation will be the NW premiere of these works!

Willy Porter has been turning first time listeners into die hard fans for more than two decades. Willy blurs the line between indie-folk and rock with his searing signature finger-picking guitar sound, absorbing lyrics, and playful, high-energy live performance style. He has shared world stages with music icons Jeff Beck, Tori Amos, and Paul Simon, carving out a successful solo career as an artist who makes music that resonates long after the last guitar chord fades.
